Jorge “Tangoman” Heilpern was born in Buenos Aires to Romanian and Polish parents. His father introduced him to music at a young age by taking him to different concerts all over the city. At 13, he got his first guitar and dedicated himself to singing at parties and school functions. At 18, Heilpern enrolled in the Municipal Conservatory of Buenos Aires and joined a trio of classical baroque music. He then formed a pop group and released his first single on CBS Argentina, giving Heilpern his first hit. After receiving a degree as an economist from the University of Buenos Aires, Heilpern worked as a professional public servant, but he decided to follow his passion for music and performing, and joined the crew of Hair. The political turmoil in Argentina forced Heilpern to immigrate to New York City at the end of 1970. A few years after the move, he established a music production company and composed music for NBC prime time shows like 'Fast Forward,' and 'American Promises' for which his work won an Emmy. In 1990, he moved to Woodstock and formed a Latin dance band, playing venues like Trumps, Joyous Lake, Bearsville Theatre, Mid Civic Center Ulster, and Woodstock '94 with musicians of high caliber such as Garth Hudson, Paul Branin, Paul Duffy, Steve Rust, and Ken Macgloin. At the end of the 1990s Heilpern played shows in Paris, Madrid, Cologne and South America. He has moved back to the United States and reunited with Garth Hudson at the River to River Summer Festival of New York 2005 and made also a return to the Joyous Lake in Woodstock.
