National Bookmobile Day Poetry Contest Winners

Bookmark and Share

National Bookmobile DayAs part of National Library Week, Wednesday, April 14, 2010 is the first-ever national Bookmobile Day, a time to honor the contributions of mobile library services in the United States. For over 100 years, bookmobiles have provided access to information and technology and supply resources for life-long learning to Americans of all walks of life, no matter where they are – rural areas, cities, or suburbs.

The Palm Beach County Library System asked children and adults to help us celebrate by writing a poem (in 100 words or less) that includes the word Bookmobile. The winners received a $25 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble Booksellers.

National Library WeekThe winners were:

Age 13 and under - Elliott Trzasko
Age 14-18 - Alexis Tischler
Age 19 and over - Bonnie Welsh

Check out the three winning poems below!

When a library closes down
The bookmobile comes around.

There are lots of books,
And I think you should look.

I like the librarians too
And I’m sure they will help you.

After I got the books to borrow,
I say “I can’t wait to go again tomorrow”.

Whatever books you want today,
The bookmobile is on the way.

Here it comes, down the street,
The neatest concept can’t be beat.

Open the doors and let me see,
All those books to read for free.

How else can I enjoy the greats,
Like Shakespeare, Hemingway and Yeats.

Or stay up and read throughout the night,
Harry Potter or Twilight.

To borrow and read to my content,
Exchange them back to be re-lent.

No cash owed it’s not real hard,
Just simply show a library card.

Books for knowledge, books galore,
Books for everyone at your door.

For evermore!

Age 14-18

By Alexis Tischler

The bus door opened and I climbed the steps,
Looked inside and let out a deep breath.

The aroma of crisp books filled the air,
No boredom found to twirl my hair.

I felt young with my imagination going a mile-a-minute,
In my own fantasy world filled with cars, rainforests, and princesses.

All the books were in a beautiful array,
The smile on my face I could never reinact nor portray.

After taking a while to pick the book for me,
I left the bookmobile and held a picture in my memory.
