On April 23 at 3:30 p.m., popular children’s book authors Mary Pope Osborne and Natalie Pope Boyce visited the Wellington Branch Library as part of the FAMOUS AUTHORS LIVE! series. Mrs. Osborne is a multi-talented author best known for the Magic Tree House series which includes the newest title, Moonlight on the Magic Flute. The Magic Tree House series is an adventurous mix of history and mystery with a time travel theme that children find irresistible. Mrs. Boyce, her sister, is the author of the companion research guides to the series which provide the historical facts to back up the fun stories.
By the time the program began, there were 312 excited fans packed into the large meeting room in the Wellington Branch Library all eager to meet the authors. Both Mary and Natalie spoke to the children about how they research and plan for each Magic Tree House book. In addition to talking about past books in the series, the authors gave the children a chance to help plan the next set of time-travel adventures. Mary showed the audience two covers for upcoming titles and asked the children for their input. She also polled the attendees on which famous historical person that Jack and Annie, the Magic Tree House kids, should meet next, with choices as wide ranging as Abraham Lincoln, Cleopatra, and Helen Keller. Children also got to vote on three future titles for an upcoming book in the series. The choices were: “Playtime for Pandas”, “Partytime for Pandas”, or “Picnic time for Pandas”. “Playtime for Pandas” received the most votes.
After the presentation, Mary and Natalie spent over an hour posing for pictures with the children. Both authors proclaimed that the library was very beautiful and were delighted to meet so many dedicated readers. Library staff helped with stamping books, passing out contest forms for the Magic Tree House Musical performance at the Kravis Center, and directing patrons and traffic. All in all, it was a busy, fun and unforgettable afternoon. Many thanks go out to Classic Bookshop in Palm Beach for helping to arrange this latest edition in the library’s FAMOUS AUTHORS LIVE! series.
