Palm Beach County Library System will celebrate our Sixth Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration with a special theme, “Sueños e Historias (Dreams and Stories),” that reflects the creative potential of our growing Hispanic community, as well as sharing rich historical traditions. This month, through music, dance, film, art, and literature, community artists and leaders will offer creative programs that highlight our various Latin American cultures.
This annual commemoration began with Hispanic Heritage Week, started in 1968 by President Lyndon Johnson. Twenty years later, President Ronald Reagan expanded the observation from September 15 to October 15, a month-long period which includes several Latin American countries’ anniversaries of independence. In 1988, Congress approved Law #100-402 to call on the people of the United States, especially the educational community, to observe National Hispanic Heritage Month with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
Hispanic Heritage Month will feature events for people of all ages and interests, at every location of the Palm Beach County Library System. Hispanic associations in the county, as always, have collaborated with the libraries in our effort to promote this celebration throughout our diverse Hispanic community.
We invite you to find these special programs in our September and October calendars, and on our website, and join us as we appreciate the important contributions coming from our community’s Hispanic cultures.
